CUSTODIAL COMMITTEE

Maintains the cleanliness of the building on weekends and holidays when staff are not available.

GARDENING COMMITTEE 

Maintains the gardens at the front and rear of the co-op as well as the second-floor terrace and roof garden. Planting, weeding, and watering are the essential tasks.

MEMBER COMMITTEE 

Interviews and screens new applicants and make recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Welcomes new members and assists the members in joining committees suitable for them. Assists committees in recruiting new members. Follows up on inactive members.

OFFICE HELP COMMITTEE

Provides support to office staff. Although the office help committee works evenings, we have room for members who may available during the day to assist with tasks such as preparing the GM package or entering data.

WEBSITE COMMITTEE

Maintains and improves our coop’s online presence. We ensure the website is up-to-date, user-friendly, and reflective of our mission. Our tasks include content updates, design enhancements, troubleshooting technical issues, and optimizing for accessibility and engagement. Whether you’re a coder, designer, writer, or just passionate about digital communication, we welcome your ideas and contributions!

NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE

Publishes a quarterly newsletter for co-op members.

ON CALL COMMITTEE 

On standby for emergencies within the building when the staff is not on site. Makes rounds to ensure the security of the building each night.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Conducts annual unit inspections as well as move in/out inspections in conjunction with the maintenance manager. The purpose of the inspections is to provide preventative maintenance and maintain the co-op’s physical condition. This committee also make recommendations to the Board and members for upkeep of the building. Keeps tabs on recycling.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Organizes social gatherings for the members of the co-op and their families. Promotes community spirit.

SENIOR AND FRIENDS

Contributes to the social health and welfare of “seniors” living in the Hazelburn community. Anyone who is not a senior is welcome to attend as “friends” of the group. They get together once per month to enjoy a snack or a meal and social time with one another.

DELEGATE TO CHF/CHF

Elected or appointed to the post by the membership. Attends monthly meetings of

Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto once per month and reports back to the Board and

Membership. They may also attend the Annual General Meeting held in various parts of the country.

FINANCE COMMITTEE

Works with the treasurer to monitor annual spending (comparing numbers from the budget and the audit). Makes recommendations for long term planning and budgeting.

INTERIOR DESIGN COMMITTEE (IDC)

Oversees recommendations and provides a valuable channel for member input on design and use of space at Hazelburn. Interior Design Committee members may also contribute to the implementation of Board approved projects.

GYM COMMITTEE

Is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, operation, and improvement of the gym facilities. This includes ensuring equipment is in good working order, coordinating necessary repairs or replacements, and recommending upgrades to enhance the gym experience. The committee also provides input on gym policies, safety guidelines, and member feedback to promote a positive and accessible workout environment for all members.

MEMBER INVOLVEMENT COMMITTEE

Focuses on fostering engagement, participation, and a sense of community among members. This includes encouraging members to participate in the various co-op committees and promoting volunteer opportunities. The committee also works to improve communication between members and committees, ensuring that all voices are heard and that members feel welcomed and valued within the Community.

OFFICE OF THE OMBUDSPERSON

Serves as an impartial and confidential resource for members to address concerns, resolve disputes, and ensure fair treatment within the co-op. The Ombudsperson provides guidance on conflict resolution, listens to member concerns, and facilitates discussions to promote understanding and equitable Solutions.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Board of Directors is responsible for the overall governance, strategic direction, and financial oversight of the co-op. Elected by the membership, the board ensures that the co-op operates in accordance with its bylaws, policies, and cooperative principles. Key responsibilities include setting policies, approving budgets, overseeing management, and making decisions that support the long-term sustainability of the co-op. The board works collaboratively with committees and members to ensure transparency, accountability, and the well-being of the community.
